OILS BY THE SEA / ROCCAPRIORE GALLERY is owned and operated by long-time Provincetown resident, artist and film maker Shirl Roccapriore. The gallery features her own abstract works as well as that of six noted area artists. The gallery also holds exhibitions throughout the season with select contemporary New England artists and is closely tied to the community, exhibiting works by local emerging youth artists associated with the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

HISTORY OF OUR LOCATION

437 Commercial Street was once home to a strong Portugese fishing family that drew their livelyhood from Cape Cod Bay and the surrounding ocean waters. Later it became Harvey Dodd's Gallery. Harvey Dodd (1933-2011) was known as "a Provincetown institution" and was among Cape Cod's primier watercolorist working entirely from his imagination (he also painted in oils and pastels). The Provincetown Art Guide of 2008 said of Harvey Dodd, "No trip to Provincetown is complete without a visit to his charming gallery, the oldest in town (1971) in a Cape Cod cottage that may well be Provincetown’s oldest structure."  We are very proud of this history and look forward to tending this slice of Provincetown artist history for many years to come.
